Configuring Data Hub

Data Hub is configured from Atlas Settings. Open Configuration, expand Atlas Features, and select Data Hub. The Data Hub configuration area combines dataset management and utilization setup in one place so Atlas Admins can validate required settings, configure metadata fields, and run historical backfills from a single workflow.

Required Configuration

Data Hub requires the following items to be configured before the experience is fully available:

• The appropriate metric indexes for License Usage and Data Utilization
• The permissions required to read the configured indexes
• The supporting access needed for Atlas to retrieve and display Data Hub information

The configuration area validates both the selected index setup and the current user's access so Atlas Admins can quickly identify issues that need attention.

Data Hub expands macros, eventtypes, tags, and wildcard-based search references when analyzing utilization to ensure accuracy.

Configure Data Hub

1. Open Settings, select Configuration, and expand Atlas Features.
2. Locate the Data Hub configuration area.
3. Select the appropriate metric indexes for License Usage and Data Utilization.
4. Review the validation results and resolve any index or permission issues shown in the status indicators.
5. Configure Backfill Data, Default Definitions, or Custom Fields when needed.
6. Save the configuration changes.

Data Hub Settings

Backfill Data

Select Backfill Data to retroactively collect Data Utilization and License Usage information. Use a backfill when you need history from before Data Hub was installed or when summarized results need to be collected in a new metrics index.

Atlas first checks the data already summarized, then fills only the gaps through queued sub-searches to reduce impact on the environment. Configure the backfill separately for Data Utilization Metrics and License Usage Metrics:

• Backfill Until: How far back Atlas should summarize search or license metrics.
• Batch Size: The maximum time range processed by each queued backfill search. Smaller batches reduce the amount of work performed by an individual search.

Select Start Calculation to begin the backfill. Results become available as the queued searches complete.

Default Definition

Select Add Definitions to populate Data Hub with approved vendor definitions from Splunkbase. Atlas stores these definitions in an internal lookup and matches them to sourcetypes defined by the relevant Splunk Technology Add-on.

In the Populate Data Definitions modal, choose how Atlas handles existing dataset descriptions:

• Append: Adds the default definition to the existing description.
• Overwrite: Replaces the existing description with the default definition.

Select Populate Definitions to apply the selected action.

Custom Fields

Enable Custom Fields to add metadata fields alongside standard dataset fields such as Owner and Use Case. Enter the required names in Field Names, then save the setting. These fields support environment-specific classification, ownership, and governance workflows.
